The University was originally established as the State College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts under the provisions of the Morrill Act approved by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862.

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension (UMCE) is the major educational outreach program of the University of Maine, with offices statewide. UMCE provides Maine people with research-based educational programs to help them live fuller, more productive lives.
