The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) public nonprofit that was founded to build an 'Internet library, ' with the purpose of offering free and permanent access to historical digital collections for researchers, historians, and scholars.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the central research and development organization for the Department of Defense (DoD). It manages and directs selected basic and applied research and development projects for DoD, and pursues research and technology where risk and payoff are both very high and where success may provide dramatic advances for traditional military roles and missions and dual-use applications.

The Story of the PING Program Yes, it's true! I'm the author of ping for UNIX. Ping is a little thousand-line hack that I wrote in an evening which practically everyone seems to know about. :-) I named it after the sound that a sonar makes, inspired by the whole principle of echo-location. In college I'd done a lot of modeling of sonar and radar systems, so the Cyberspace analogy seemed very apt.
