Burmese carry surprising weight for their size and have often been described as "bricks wrapped in silk." Their coats are very short, satin-like in texture, and generally require little grooming other than daily petting. There is a range in Burmese head and body type; the more compact cats with the rounder heads are seen in the show ring. Burmese have large, expressive eyes that are great pools of innocence and seductive appeal, irresistible in effect.

The European Burmese is an elegant but not a fragile cat. It is of medium size with good bone structure, excellent muscular development, expressive eyes and a sweet expression.

Although there are two different Breed Standards for Burmese, it is an undisputed fact that all Burmese bred today can trace their ancestry back to a single cat known as Wong Mau. Ten colours of Burmese are recognised in the Western world with the exception of the United States and Canada. Therefore, Burmese are split into two groups: Burmese and Foreign Burmese.
