When a star like our Sun comes to age, having longly burned away all the hydrogene to helium in its core in its main sequence phase, and also (in the consequent red giant stadium), the helium to carbon and ...

The planetary nebula M57 (NGC 6720), or the Ring Nebula as it is most commonly referred to for obvious reasons, lies about 1600 light years away from the Earth. The name "planetary nebula" given to this class of objects is due to the fact that many of them appear disc-like, similar to how the planets in our Solar System appear when viewed through a telescope. In reality, planetary nebulae are stars at the point of death.

Fusion - Physics of a Fundamental Energy Source Planetary Nebulae A planetary nebula can result as a star with mass of less than several times the solar mass ( low mass star) ejects mass in the red giant stage, near the end of the star's life. In this stage, the central part of the star, which is about the size of the earth, consists of a carbon ash core, a shell in which helium is fusing to ...

Variability of Planetary Nebula Central Stars For the past decade, we have been searching for short timescale variability in the central stars of Galactic planetary nebulae (PNN). By using CCDs to simultaneously measure the PNN and several comparison stars, and by applying image analysis techniques to suppress or remove the background, we have been able to derive relative magnitudes for the ...
