Until fairly recently, a diagnosis of inflammatory breast cancer was virtually a death sentence. Only 2% of patients survived five years, and long-term survival was almost unheard of. While overall survival rates for breast cancer have only improved slightly since the 1950s, there have been significant improvements for IBC, and recently published studies give five-year survival rates in the neighbourhood of 40% with relatively few relapses after five years.

My Story I was diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer in April 2000. This was the year that I thought would be 'my' year. I was looking forward to being a mother, having made a decision to go ahead with IVF treatment. New Year 2000 was a very special time, with my husband Tim and I confirming our love for each other and the need to move on after his serious accident the previous year.

DavidI Have a Lump! Breast Cancer: One Husband's Story December 18, 1996, 6:00 p.m. Nothing extraordinary about the day or the time or the setting. I'd come upstairs from my office in the basement, pleased with a good day's work. Chowder, our robust Black Lab -- the Pavarotti of dogs, we have joked -- had been fed and walked. I was sitting down to catch Chet and Natalie on the Channel 5 news.
