In 1940 the University of Connecticut established the Hartford Extension Center to help meet the educational needs of students in the Hartford area. The demand for educational offerings became so great that the University organized the Hartford branch in 1946 and extended its offerings. In the fall of 1970 the University of Connecticut at Hartford moved to its present location.
