Our goal is to bring into communication the variety of approaches to the understanding of human nature which have a regrettable tendency to be less in touch with one another than they might. We make welcome writings and discussions on anthropology, archaeology, artificial intelligence, behaviour genetics, cognitive science, developmental psychology, economics, ethology, evolutionary biology, ...

SOCIOBIOLOGY C. George Boeree Ever since Darwin came out with his theory of evolution, people - including Darwin himself -- have been speculating on how our social behaviors (and feelings, attitudes, and so on) might also be affected by evolution. After all, if the way our bodies look and work as biological creatures can be better understood through evolution, why not the things we do with those ...

Academic debates rarely attract as much media attention as do those surrounding human nature and behaviour, and much ink has been spilled in documenting the various arguments and counter-arguments that pervade evolutionary approaches to understanding what it is to be human. The scientists and philosophers involved in these ongoing standoffs have themselves not been shy in airing their views in ...

Before reading this book, I held the position that group selection was a means of evolution that had played a role in the evolution of a few forms of life, but there was no evidence it had been a significant factor in human evolution. After reading this book, I hold the same position. Hence, in my case, Alexander Field failed in his attempt to demonstrate that human altruism cannot be explained ...

Sociobiology Updated: 1/28/01 Sociobiology, in its most recent form, dates from the 1970s and the work of Edward O. Wilson. However, the roots of sociobiology are older. The first use of the term sociobiology likely dates to the work of Warder C. Allee, Alfred E. Emerson, and their associates in their 1949 book, Principles of Animal Ecology. Sociobiogists study the behavior of social animals, ...

The opposition between Dawkins and Gould is perhaps the best-known intellectual stand-off in modern science. In this zippy, readable little book (which weighs in at 140 small pages and no footnotes), philosopher Kim Sterelny takes us through the belief systems of the two protagonists, and explores some of the disagreements between them.

Ian Tattersall is an able and graceful writer which just heightens my dismay over this unfortunate book. I should also add that he is a charming and gracious person, a delightful dinner companion, and an old friend. I put this in to indicate that, despite the criticism I am offering of his book, I have no personal animus against the author.
