The major focus of current programs in the department is on food and fiber-producing animals, including dairy cattle, beef cattle. sheep, swine and poultry. Horses are also considered an important part of our mission and other companion animals (e.g. dogs, cats) as well as laboratory species (e.g. rats, mice, hamsters, rabbits) receive some attention.

The primary mission of the statewide Animal Science program is to assist the livestock industries of Florida, helping to achieve efficient production by contributing to the solution of livestock production problems through research, resident instruction, and extension.

The department offers graduate instruction leading to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Courses of study and research may be undertaken in several disciplines related to animal science. These include genetics (animal breeding), nutrition (monogastric and ruminant) and physiology (digestive, environmental, reproductive).

The department offers the B.S.A. Degree with a Major in Animal Science, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Animal Science. Graduate studies in subject matter areas of genetics, nutrition, parasitology, and physiology may be pursued in animal production of food science.

The Department of Animal and Food Science offers a four-year undergraduate degree in Animal Science, with emphasis on various animals. Students can specialize in dairy cattle, meat animals or horses. The Department also offers a Dairy Science major.
