Since 1977, The Western Journal of Black Studies (WJBS) has been a leading interdisciplinary journal that is devoted to publishing scholarly articles, from a wide range of disciplines, that focus mainly on the experience of African Americans in the United States of America.
Founded in 1969 and hailed by The New York Times as "a journal in which the writings of many of today's finest black thinkers may be viewed, " THE BLACK SCHOLAR has firmly established itself as the leading journal of black cultural and political thought in the United States. In its pages African American studies intellectuals, community activists, and national and international political leaders come to grips with basic issues confronting black America and Africa.

Gates has been described as the most notable scholar of African-American studies in the country. At Harvard, Gates has revived a black studies department which, by many accounts, had been allowed to languish for 20 years.
