This is the illustrated story of the Modoc Indians, originally located in northern California/southern Oregon, and now organized as the Modoc Tribe of Oklahoma. The Modocs engaged in one of the most expensive Indian wars ever fought, both in terms of money and lives. Over 1, 000 U.S. soldiers were eventually involved in defeating some 50 Modoc warriors in the Modoc War (1872-73). The only U.S. Brig. General ever killed in an Indian battle was killed in this war. The article is written by the great-grand- daughter of one of the Modoc warriors.
