The college was founded by Presbyterian pioneers as Albany Collegiate Institute in 1867. The school moved to the former Lloyd Frank estate in Portland's southwest hills in 1942 and took the name Lewis & Clark College. In 1965 Northwestern School of Law was merged with Lewis & Clark College and in 1984 graduate programs in education, special education, and counseling psychology were consolidated into the Graduate School of Professional Studies.
