Sarcoidosis is a common and multisystemic disease that can affect a variety of organs, most often in the pulmonary system. It is characterized by the formation of what are known as granulomas - small, granular inflammatory lesions. The way in which the disease presents varies remarkably. In some patients, it is short-lived and mild, and in others it becomes a chronic, debilitating sickness.
