The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is the state's only comprehensive academic health center. Founded in 1879 as a proprietary medical school by a group of eight physicians with 22 students, the institution is now a part of the University of Arkansas System with about 1875 students in five academic units -- the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Health Related Professions, and the Graduate School.
