Association for Social History was founded as non-partisan, non-government, non-profit organization in Belgrade, FR Yugoslavia in 1998. Its work is open to public and its main goals are: # researching of social history - mainly in Serbia, Yugoslavia and South-East Europe in XIX and XX century # working on projects in field of social history, publishing scientific works and historical documents on social history # cooperation with similar organizations in the world and work on mutual projects # organizing scientific meetings, seminars and panels on issues concerning social history

Six centuries ago the Turkish empire conquered the empire that was Serbia. Some Serbians moved toward Islam, others to Roman Catholicism, but many -- mostly monks and shepherds -- held to their belief in the Orthodox church and to memories of the Serbian empire.
